Fundamentals of Hybrid Technology Professional Enhancement

This course presents students with the knowledge required to successfully diagnose and service this latest addition to the automotive industry - in hands-on format. Participants will be exposed to the most advanced and comprehensive technical training programme available to aftermarket repair shops in compliance with industry standards and occupational safety and health requirements.

Entry Requirements

Students are required to complete three 4-hour weekday sessions, for a total of 12 contact hours.

  • Experience in the field of the Automotive Services Industry or prospective hybrid vehicle owners.
  • Applicants must be sixteen (16) years of age.
  • N.B. 100% attendance is required for the certificate of completion to be issued.

Programme Fee: $1000

Other fees may be applicable dependent on the programme.

All programmes include theory and relevant practicals.

Graduates will receive an NESC Certificate of Completion which can allow for direct entry into NESC's 1 year Level II Programmes.

Programme Overview

Hybrid vehicles present an exciting challenge and opportunity in the automotive service industry. Hybrids take many forms and incorporate many new technologies and never before seen systems. Many components originally designed for use in the 42 volt system are being put to use in the much higher voltage hybrid vehicles. Fuel cell equipped hybrids are a reality and are almost ready for production. Improvements in battery design and chemistry has breathed new life into PHEV’s, or Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicles. This is the first in a series of courses designed to present you with the knowledge required to successfully diagnose and service this latest addition to the automotive industry. This course will cover material in a hands-on format and participants are expected to attend class and arrive on time.

Course Outline

Upon successful completion of this programme the participant should be able to perform the following outcomes:

Module 1: Hybrid Safety, Tools and Equipment 1 hr

Outcome: Describe safety concerns while using tools and equipment when servicing hybrid vehicles.

  1. Recognize high voltage system cables and components.
  2. Identify possible dangers in hybrid vehicles.
  3. Describe test equipment, meter and accessory requirements.
Module 2: Hybrid Power Train Types 1 hr

Outcome: Identify the types of powertrain designs used.

  1. Distinguish among Series, Parallel and Series/Parallel power train designs.
Module 3: Motors 1 hr

Outcome: Describe the types of motors/generators used.

  1. Describe the operation and theory of electric motors, electric generators, eddy brake motors, brushless motors, ISA/ISG, battery modules, capacitors, AC/DC converters, regenerative braking and idle stop systems.
Module 4: Operation of a Hybrid Vehicle 3 hrs

Outcome: Describe operations specific to hybrid vehicles.

  1. Describe starting/shutting down procedures.
  2. Describe emergency shut/down procedures.
  3. Describe disabling auto start systems.
  4. Identify icons/gauges/indicators/warnings.
Module 5: Maintenance/Serviceable components 1 hr

Outcome: Describe basic maintenance services necessary on Hybrid vehicles.

  1. Describe safety precautions for each serviceable component.
  2. Describe procedures for lube, oil, coolant, brake and tune-up services.
Module 6: Introduction to Hybrid Diagnostic Trouble Codes 1 hr

Outcome: Use new hybrid diagnostic trouble codes and procedures.

  1. Identify and troubleshoot new diagnostic trouble codes and procedures using appropriate scan tool.
  2. Describe advanced servicing techniques related to new diagnostic trouble codes.
