The Drilling Rig Derrickman course provides training at a supervisory level. The Derrickman has far more responsibility and a more complex skill set than a Floorhand, and acts as a supervisor to the crew. The position requires a comprehensive knowledge of the entire Mud System from make-up and mixing of the mud and the materials used, to the maintenance of the Mud and Transfer Pumps. The work also includes testing of the mud qualities and keeping the mud within the specifications required by the driller. The Derrickman has to be proficient in the operations of the Monkey Board and Stabbing Board during Tripping and Casing operations, and is responsible for the maintenance and inspection of the Crown Block, Traveling Block, Swivel and Top Drive. When working on large offshore rigs he must understand and operate the liquid and dry powder material bulk storage and transfer systems. The Derrickman has to fully understand the process of well control and his role and duties during well control operations.
Appropriate combination of Education and Industry Experience.
Students are required to complete three 4-hour sessions per week.
