Drilling Rig Roustabout Short Courses

The Drilling Rig Roustabout course is designed to provide basic, entry level skills specific to the drilling industry which, like other industries, has a well-established series of job designations and skill sets that form a progression to the higher supervisory and management levels. The Roustabout is often regarded as a labourer-level position which is a very inaccurate description of the actual skills required to fulfil this position. The work involves being at the centre of almost all the activities that take place in the operation of a drilling rig and needs specialised knowledge and skill to ensure that work is perform safely and efficiently.

Entry Requirements

Appropriate combination of Education and Industry Experience.

Students are required to complete three 4-hour sessions per week.

APTITUDE UPON COMPLETION

  • Demonstration of knowledge of safety hazards and correct procedures involved in drilling.
  • Possession of knowledge of the Petroleum Industry, history and practices.
  • Ability to work with cranes and the handling of heavy loads.
  • Ability to recognise and describe the components of a drilling rig.
  • Understanding of the skills and duties of a roustabout.
  • Assessed as competent to perform the practical skills required of a roustabout.

  1. HSE, OSH/Plea Safety Course – 24 hrs
  2. Rigging and Lifting procedures – 28 hrs
  3. Introduction to the Drilling Rig – 26 hrs
  4. Rig Floor Fundamentals – 24 hrs
  5. Crane operating procedures – 12 hrs
  6. Practical Training and Assessment – 24 hrs
