This Apprenticeship Programme provides theoretical and practical training in Heavy Equipment Maintenance. Students are taught to interpret work orders and technical manuals and how to keep equipment clean, lubricated and effectively maintained. Through a combination of workshop and on-the-job training, students are exposed to the skills required to diagnose faults and malfunctions, adjust equipment and repair or replace defective parts, components or systems.

Graduates will possess the skills and knowledge to install and maintain high pressure and low-pressure steam and hot liquid systems, including various process and industrial systems. They will be able to fabricate, join and install any pipe system used for various purposes in buildings, using any type of pipe in accordance with production standards required by industry.

The Instrumentation Diploma Programme teaches students to install, maintain and repair the measuring and control instruments used in industrial and commercial processing. Students are exposed to variety of pneumatic, electronic and microcomputer instruments used to measure and control variables such as pressure, flow, temperature levels, motion etc.

The Drilling Rig Roughneck course is designed to focus on the operations and duties that are normal to operations on the rig floor during Drilling, Tripping and Casing. The Roughneck is also termed as a Floorhand and is required to be knowledgeable and proficient in handling the tools and downhole components involved in the drilling of a well. The work involves being at the centre of the activities that take place around the well which must be done in a safe manner because of the inherent dangers associated with heavy components, large tools, high mechanical forces and pressures encountered in the circulation system and other operations.
PROGRAMME DURATION: 120 HOURS
The Drilling Rig Roustabout course is designed to provide basic, entry level skills specific to the drilling industry which, like other industries, has a well-established series of job designations and skill sets that form a progression to the higher supervisory and management levels. The Roustabout is often regarded as a labourer-level position which is a very inaccurate description of the actual skills required to fulfil this position. The work involves being at the centre of almost all the activities that take place in the operation of a drilling rig and needs specialised knowledge and skill to ensure that work is perform safely and efficiently.
This training course was designed to increase the knowledge and awareness of the rig crew and personnel on the role and interaction of the drilling fluids when drilling an oil or gas well. This course is offered exclusively at NESC's Drilling Academy, Ste. Madeline.
PROGRAMME DURATION: 150 HOURS
The Drilling Rig Derrickman course provides training at a supervisory level. The Derrickman has far more responsibility and a more complex skill set than a Floorhand, and acts as a supervisor to the crew. The position requires a comprehensive knowledge of the entire Mud System from make-up and mixing of the mud and the materials used, to the maintenance of the Mud and Transfer Pumps. The work also includes testing of the mud qualities and keeping the mud within the specifications required by the driller. The Derrickman has to be proficient in the operations of the Monkey Board and Stabbing Board during Tripping and Casing operations, and is responsible for the maintenance and inspection of the Crown Block, Traveling Block, Swivel and Top Drive. When working on large offshore rigs he must understand and operate the liquid and dry powder material bulk storage and transfer systems. The Derrickman has to fully understand the process of well control and his role and duties during well control operations.
