Subject Matter Expert - Item Writer

The Item Writer will develop Multiple Choice test items that measure student progress through learning objectives in the NESC Diploma Programmes.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. In accordance with Bloom's taxonomy cognitive domain, develop multiple-choice items testing course objectives outlined in NESC Diploma Programme curriculum using the course material provided.
  2. Draw upon expert knowledge of in the specified course area to create item stems and answer options that are clear, readable, and accurate.
  3. For each item developed, identify the relevant course unit, objective, level of difficulty (Bloom's taxonomy) and keywords.
  4. Independently evaluate test items for creativity, clarity, content alignment, appropriateness,fairness, and quality.
  5. Revise items based on feedback from item reviewers.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science Degree related to the course area
  • Technician's Diploma or equivalent
  • Level 5 Assessor Certification will be an asset
  • Five years relevant industry/field experience
  • Current or previous experience in the course field or a closely-related field
  • Experience in training delivery at a post-secondary education level

Competencies

  • Sound item writing techniques
  • Sound verbal and written communication skills (orally — in person or by telephone, and in written form)
  • Sound knowledge of major policies and procedures governing assigned course areas
  • Operating knowledge of and experience with personal computers and peripherals, and ability to use office software applications (Microsoft Suite)

  • Be able to demonstrate creative ability to generate test items
  • Be able to communicate both verbally and in writing and engage professionally, confidently and effectively with other appointees and NESC staff
  • Be able to work professionally and co-operatively with other appointees and NESC staff
  • Be able to demonstrate good forward planning and time management skills and adhere to deadlines
  • Adhere to NESC's confidentiality requirements
  • Adhere to copyright requirements for materials used in item development
  • Have a home computer or laptop with broadband internet connection and a private e-mail address as candidates will be required to work remotely
