History of Apprenticeship Training

Apprenticeship training in Trinidad and Tobago has a long history which dates back to 1906 when the Board of Industrial Training (BIT) was formed. The BIT had the responsibility to provide, regulate, train and certify apprentices in certain trades.   Some of the benefactors of these apprenticeship training programmes are now leading industrialist in Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean .

In 2003 the Ministry of Science Technology and Tertiary Education (MSTTE) re-introduced apprenticeship training to nationals of Trinidad and Tobago under the National Training Agency (NTA).   The NTA has the responsibility to oversee the National Apprenticeship Programme (NAP).   NAP involves three aspects:

Registration of Apprentices

Registration of Employers

Certification of Apprentices
